Miniature Flying Tern Carving Kit

Product Description

Yes, we realize this kit is listed under decoys even though it isn't exactly what you'd expect. It is a carving kit, though, just scaled down. We carve a lot of flying terns so thought we'd give others a chance to share the experience.

Finished, our miniature tern measures 6.5" from tip of beak to tip of tail and he has a 11.5" wingspan, so it's a nice size for display. This little tern is fun to carve, but challenging enough in its own way to keep any carver interested. There are only two pieces, the body cutout and the continuous cutout for both wings. Glue them together and carving can begin. Since it is a basic level project, no special tools are needed other than a simple straight bladed knife.

The simple instructions include photos of work in progress as well as the completed birds. The kit contains the hanger and even the sandpaper needed. Instructions include how to paint your carving as either a Common Tern or an Arctic Tern. The common Tern is shown in the photo at the top of this page. Here is one of the photos showing a carved and sanded bird...

The Arctic Tern is shown just below.

This is a good sized carving project for a young carver with smaller hands, and if you feel they are too young to be using a knife even with supervision, we suggest you show them how to use a file to contour the bird. We want them to be safe. It takes a little longer doing it that way, but the file followed by the included sandpaper will do the job nicely. Of course no one says only the kids can have all the fun...
