If you are serious about wanting a Newfoundland Trap Skiff, PLEASE read this page all the way to the end.
The Newfoundland Trap Skiff is the largest of the wherries we build. Her lines came from a century-old builders half model. The largest of the wherries, with her balanced ketch rig she is a superb sailer (plan for the alternate sloop rig is included). She can be built simply and left open, or fancy with mahogany deck and oval cockpit. She is one of the loveliest small craft ever designed. The plans consist of lines and offsets, construction plan and 2 sail plans. Believe it or not, several of these have been built as "first boats" by folks who characterized themselves as novices! From the photos we've seen, they did beautiful work. Don't think you can build one? Others have. Witness this NTS that Kali (on board) built together with her brother and father...It took them two seasons, but they did it.
Here's what her ketch rig looks like from the plans...
Another plan page shows the alternate sloop rig. There are 5 pages in the plan set, and they are blackline prints.
A plan page for storm sails and drifter is available separately.
When you place an order for plans, understand that what you are purchasing is the construction rights for one time use only–and every plan page is so marked. A royalty amounting to 50% of the original cost of the plans is due on subsequent boats built from our boat plans. So if you decide you would like to build a second (or third, or fourth) Duck Trap Wherry for example, and the plans cost $65, then the royalty would only amount to $32.50 per boat.
Figure it would take you too long to build one or that it would be too pricey? We have a solution for you–an owner is offering his for sale now that the season is winding down. It's complete with spars, sails, oars and all for the unbelievable price of only $6000! Frankly, you wouldn't be able to buy the materials and sails needed for one for that amount of money. We feel confident in saying that this is an opportunity you won't see again. Give us a call.
